A tutor that answers questions from the course reading

A student highlights a sentence and asks. The answer comes from the reading and names the section it used, and the tutor never does graded work for them.

Full disclosure

How the tutor works

This section explains what answers students, where it runs, what is kept and who can see it.

Checked against Prepara's code and Privacy Policy on October 8, 2026Privacy Policy
What it does
Students highlight a sentence or ask about the book and get an explanation, practice questions and help from the chapter they are reading. It never gives the answer to an open graded question.
Kind of model
Generative.
Which models answer
Ordinary questions: gpt-oss-120b, an open-weight model, on Cloudflare Workers AI, with Llama 4 Scout 17B as the fallback. Longer discussion conversations: OpenAI gpt-5.6-luna first, with the same fallback. A course can be set to use an Anthropic Claude model. Searching the book: BGE base. Safety check: Llama Guard 3 8B.
Where it runs
Ordinary questions are processed inside Cloudflare's network, Prepara's hosting provider, under Prepara's own account. Discussion conversations are sent to OpenAI. Nothing runs on the student's own device.
How the book is searched
For a question about the chapter being read, the tutor is given that chapter's text. For a question about the whole book, it finds the closest passages of the book itself, stored in Prepara's database, with no outside search service.
Training by outside AI companies
None. Prepara has given no provider permission to train on it. Cloudflare states it does not train on Workers AI inputs and outputs; OpenAI states it does not train on data sent through its API unless the customer opts in, and Prepara has not.
Prepara's own use
Prepara uses tutor conversations, with names and contact details removed, to improve its AI features and to build and test its own models. The Privacy Policy says so.
Shared with model companies
Ordinary questions: processed by Cloudflare inside Prepara's account. Discussion conversations: sent to OpenAI, which keeps abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. A course set to a Claude model: sent to Anthropic.
How long it is kept
With the student's account while it is active, so the student and the instructor can read it. After about 30 days the text moves to encrypted storage and still opens when asked for.
Deletion
A student can download everything and delete the account in Settings. A school writes to admin@preparacourse.com, and Prepara deletes the student's records and stored files, including the encrypted conversations.
Who can see a student's questions
The student; the instructor and teaching staff of a section the student is enrolled in; Prepara staff only when needed to run the service. Not other students.
Records law
Class records, tutor conversations included, are education records under FERPA, handled for the school.
Safety checks
Every question passes an automatic check for harmful content before anything is stored, and a flagged question is refused. The tutor is told to answer from the book, say when it is unsure, never invent book content and never do graded work.
Accuracy
Answers can be wrong or incomplete; students are told to check anything important.
Open textbooks
The tutor is off on open textbooks whose license does not allow commercial use.

Which books have the tutor

The tutor answers from the book students are reading, so it works inside the books on Prepara. On open textbooks whose license does not allow commercial use, it stays off.

Does it give students answers to graded work?

No. It explains and asks a question back, and it never does graded work for a student.

Questions

Where do the answers come from?

From the reading assigned in your course. Each answer names the section it used.

Can I see the conversations?

Yes. You can read any conversation in your section, and a report shows the questions that come up most.

What do students read before the first chat?

That AI can be wrong and to check what matters, that conversations are saved, and that the tutor never does graded work.

Can it be wrong?

Yes. Answers can be wrong or incomplete, and students are told to check anything important.
